Project Background

The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45km twin-tunnel underground rail link up to 42 metres below the Auckland city centre. It will transform the downtown Waitematā Station (Britomart) into a two-way through-station that better connects the city’s rail network.

The systems and safety assurance process of the major project is ultimately required to demonstrate the CRL is acceptably safe and for all relevant safety information to be transferred to Licenced Rail Participants such that they can amend their approved safety cases to allow for the operation of the delivered railway.

How Innova Helped

Innova was engaged as senior technical advisors to support the Tunnel Ventilation System and associated interfaces supplier in development of key systems and safety assurance plans and artefacts against the contracted requirements and CENELEC standards. Innova worked closely with the project teams and the Link Alliance in establishing the assurance approach for the critical safety integrity level 2 functions of the control system.

Achieved Outcomes

By following a systematic Systems engineering methodology and CENELEC standards EN50126, EN50128, EN50129 and EN61508, Innova supported the development of the following:

  • Software Quality Assurance and Plan
  • RAM Plan and input to RAM analysis
  • Preliminary Safety Case
  • Hazard, Risk and Safety input and advice
  • Due Diligence and Peer Reviews
  • Stakeholder consultation
