Project Background

Transport for NSW awarded UGL a contract to augment the Principal’s digital train radio system (DTRS) to enable an integrated rail signalling system utilising an onboard and trackside ETCS Level 2 system. The design package scope of work included the design and delivery of a packet core network to augment the existing DTRS network.

How Innova Helped

As a member of the UGL Systems & Safety Assurance team, Innova resources were directly involved in delivering the cyber security management plan, cyber security risk and controls workbook, cyber security detailed design report, vulnerability assessment and penetration test plan, penetration test cases and penetration test reports.

An Innova resource conducted the vulnerability assessment and penetration test of the solution on site.

Achieved Outcomes

By following a risk-based approach to meeting the cyber security needs of the project, it was able to:

  • Simplify the cyber security management plan inherited from earlier phases and remove unnecessary effort.
  • Demonstrate the equivalence in risk profile between the packet core network vendor’s common off the shelf (COTS) solution and the cyber security standards mandated for the solution.
  • Identify areas of further cyber security risk profile improvement.
  • Provide cyber security verification and validation of the packet core network.
